ABSURDITIES OF
ARTS CENSORSHIP

INSTALLATION, PRINT

What is considered good or bad in a world of censorship? Some may find a work offensive while others may not. This project exhibits posters that react to censored artworks from 1990s to 2010s – touching on topics such as politics, sexuality, race and religion. Since imagery is censored, words are more powerful than ever. Viewers are able to decide whether it is justified for the artwork to be banned based on its written description. Ultimately, this project aims to challenge the notion of censorship and to cultivate a better critical thinking of the arts.

INSTALLATION   Placed in chronological order, each row of the installation features one censored artwork based on the year they were censored. Viewers are then able to scan the QR code to see the imagery itself. A pamphlet is provided for the viewers to get to know about the context of each censored work in more detail.

Censored works include:
Brother Cane by Josef Ng (1994),Talaq by Elangovan (1998), To Singapore, WIth Love (2013) and I know Why the Rebel Sings by Newsha Tavakolian (2016).
